Session 4: The Weevil

Storm King's Thunder
**Spoiler Warning for the Storm King's Thunder hardcover adventure** (you have been warned or some such)

Recap for Session 4: The Weevil
Long-Term Goal: Figure out what the Giants are up to and stop them.

Short-Term Goal: Complete the Triboar NPC quests in order to find clues into what is going on with the Giants.  First up: Darz Helgar had an old acquaintance who had an interesting tale to tell in which he saw a dwarf cleaning the stables in Xantharl’s Keep. This acquaintance believed this dwarf to be the Weevil, an outlaw wanted by authorities in Mirabar for 5,000 gp alive.  Darz feels that he is too old to take on this quest but offers it to Force Grey in repayment for defending Triboar. Force Grey is currently on their way back from Mirabar.

High Points: Dowell and Kipper Harpell are working on enchanting a couple of things for Dylan. Leif, as Uldrik Timberlake (a cover), tried to gamble his night away in Longsaddle and ended up in jail for the evening. He had to pay a bit of a fine but he and his weighted dice live to gamble another day.
Force Grey made it to north to Xanthral’s Keep. Shortly after arriving Xantharl’s Keep came under attack by a Frost giant with Ogres who had “Goblin Hucker” attachments on them  and a bunch of Goblins. During the attack Force Grey was able to apprehend The Weevil before he was killed or kidnapped by a group of Bugbear infiltrators.
Later, Dylan collected five Crag cat pelts from a night on the road and had one made into an excellent fur cloak. The Weevil was turned over to the Axe of Mirabar for 5,000 gp. Garroc pimped out the Knights of Samular and Force Grey to Amelia Shieldhood, a representative of the Axe of Mirabar and the Council of Sparkling Stones. (she will contact you with any available work around Mirabar).
On the way back to Xantharl’s Keep, Force Grey tracked and killed a roving Hill giant.

Complications/Unresolved Questions:   Who was Ward Gusthammer and why did Okssort have his tombstone? What’s the deal with the Vonindod? Why did the Desert giants attack the Fire giants? What’s with the skull Leif found at Six Windows? Will the Harpell made magic items be a boon or a curse? What other difficulties will Force Grey endure upon the road? What quests wait for Force Grey in Triboar?

Level Update: Still 6th level, probably going to be 6th level for awhile.

DM Notes: This session went well but I had a DMing snafu. My player’s became really interested in the Goblin Huckers and I narrated the garrison going out and defeating the attacking force. After the session multiple players made mention of wanting to play that out. They wanted a battle between them and the Huckers but I didn’t provide that and, honestly, that was a poor call on me. It would have been a good, high action fight. My bad
Also, after I finished this session and during my preparation for the coming weeks I got an idea. I went through the whole of the adventure and wrote in the CR of all the NPCs throughout the book and came up with an idea. With a little tweaking here and there along with using Volo’s Guide to Monsters and Tome of Beasts I could make this campaign last until level 20. I planned to discuss this with the group and make some minor changes to the overall storyline to help this play out. (more on this in coming Recaps).
